Materials
Digitally-produced printsAll digital prints up to 19 * 13 inch are produced on an Epson R2400 printer using the latest K3 Ultrachrome pigment inks for archival permanence. Prints are made on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Fine Art or Fine Art Baryta Inkjet Paper. Larger digital prints are produced on a larger Epson professional printer.
Canvas prints
All canvas art prints are produced via an Epson 3880 professional printer on to 100% pure cotton canvas, and finished with transparent protective coating. Canvases are hand stretched over a mitred wooden stretcher frame, ready to hang on the wall. The image is wrapped around the edge of the frame.
Finishing
Unmounted prints are simply rolled carefully for despatch in a cardboard tube.
All mounted prints are backed with acid-free artist card, and overlaid with matte windows cut precisely by a computer controlled cutter.
Framing
Should you wish to have a print framed behind glass, please get in touch. Choices include satin black, silver or driftwood. Please note that posting framed prints is restricted to smaller sizes of print.
Darkroom-produced prints
(Please get in touch if you would like to have prints produced in the darkroom).
All prints produced in the darkroom are made on double weight fibre-based photographic paper, and are toned either with selenium (subtle colder tone), or with thiocarbamide (sepia) or gold (blue/grey) toners, depending on the tone required in the final print. All toners enhance the archival permanence of the prints. All lith prints produce a pink or reddish brown tone, while toning of lith prints in gold toner delivers a blue tone. If you are unsure as to what effect you want, please drop me a note for advice.
It is advisable to have fibre-based prints mounted rather than unmounted, as they tend not to lie completely flat unless mounted using dry mounting tissue.
Note: Due to the nature of lith printing, the technique does not suit all images. Furthermore, the results cannot be replicated exactly from print to print (although they will be similar). The technique involves the use of lith developer in producing images on certain photographic papers, and generally results in images with a pink or chocolate tone, which include both delicate highlights and punchy darker tones (although some images can be printed with an overall delicate tone without strong shandows).
Please note that lith prints can only be produced as darkroom prints. Also, some images are not particularly suited to lith printing e.g. images with large dark areas. Please get in touch before ordering lith prints for further advice, either through 'Contact' or via e-mail at Monochrome Wales.
Laser Prints
These are true photographic prints on to the finest archival Kodak colour paper. The process involves printing digital files using a specialist Lightjet laser printer.
Photo Etchings
Photo etchings are a traditional labour-intensive and highly skilled printing process which involves transferring a photographic image on to copper or aluminium plate, and then chemically etching the image in to the surface. This is then inked by hand using specialist pigment inks, and placed in a heavy roller press with fine art paper to produce a unique print with the image embedded into the paper surface.
